Welding Birdshit - Tue, Oct 10, 2023
I'm learning to weld, here's what I learnt today.
I’ve been learning to mig weld. Some days it seems to go pretty well, then other days it doesn’t. most recently, I was concerned I was wasting material by grinding all of my welds. So on this occasion I used the wire brush on my bench grinder, got a really clean looking piece of galv box, and proceeded as I usually do. I set my machine up according to the material thickness and my wire gauge. Gas on 12l/s. Got to it.
Lo and behold, I got welds that looked like a bird shit, in the shape and with a weird white surrounging.
After much fiddling with the settings, my conclusion was that the weld was contaminated because of the galvanising. A quick question to bing AI reassured me my assumptions were correct.
Back to the shed a day later saw me get the Makita grinder out, grind my next welds and try again. Success!!
